Leadership is defined by the Webster’s new world
dictionary as the ability to lead. It can be described
as the ability to inspire or influence others to work
towards a set goal. It also implies that a leader is
able to achieve a particular set goal usually against
the odds. Leadership is not the same as management even
though they are somehow connected to each other. Management
is the process of effectively using resources to achieve
something. An effective leader is able to stimulate
people to strive willingly given them an experience
to attain the set objective. Such a leader also brings
about encouragement, inspiration and also teams up with
his people to achieve results. An effective leader is
able to stimulate people to strive willingly given them
an experience to attain a set goal.
Another characteristic of effective leaders is that
they bring about encouragement, inspiring his or her
subordinates and also teams up with the people in achieving
the beleaguered objectives. A leader must be able to
lead people in all situations both pleasant and unpleasant.
Leadership is the process of influencing people to strive
towards excellence and as such must be developed.
A search through Scripture reveals that throughout the
history God has always blessed man with many effective
leaders a few of them include:
• Grand father Moses
• Nehemiah
• Uncles Timothy, Peter and Paul
• Joshua
• John-the-Baptist
• Queen Esther
• Lydia
• King David and on and on the list goes.
The multimillion dollar question is “Are leaders
born or made”. Leadership may be acquired in a
formal or informal way. Some may be born leaders. Which
ever category one finds yourself you need to put in
all effort to develop it.
STYLES OF LEADERSHIP
AUTOCRATIC LEADER
This leader adopts a command style. Usually he or she
does not allow his or her subordinates to decide on
issues. Such leaders’ words are final and no chance
is given for others to say their mind.
PERSUASIVE LEADER
This leader makes decisions and sells it to their subordinates.
CONSULTATIVE LEADER
This leader presents tentative decisions or programs
and invites suggestions or contributions. Their decisions
are final though they consult. Such leaders normally
condemn or assign reasons why the views of their subjects
will not work. He or she defines the limit and ask for
group’s approval.
DEMOCRATIC LEADER
Such leaders ask their subordinates to make the decisions
and they implement.
Now that we know all these forms or styles of leadership
the unavoidable question is which of these is the best.
For an answer I will say none in its entirety is the
best each of them have they own cons and pros, my advice
is that evaluate the situation at stake and decide on
which style will be most appropriate.
