FAITH AND ORDER OF THE PRESBYTERIAN
CHURCH OF GHANA
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana as part of the Universal
Church believes in and worships one God, Father, Son
and Holy Spirit. It affirms its belief in the Gospel
of the sovereign grace and love of God, wherein through
Jesus Christ, His only Son, our lord, incarnate, crucified
and Risen, He freely offers to all men and women,
upon repentance and faith, the forgiveness of sin,
renewal by the Holy Spirit and eternal life and commissions
of them to labour in the fellowship of faith and to
call all men and women throughout the world to enter
into the Kingdom of God.
As part of the Reformed family of Churches, members
feel called to a Spirit-filled life received through:
The Word of God as it is contained in the Holy Scriptures
of the Old and New Testaments which are accepted as
the inspired Word of God, the supreme rule of faith
and containing all things necessary for salvation;
The Sacraments which are a means of grace and our
Christian fellowship, the source of strength and inspiration.
With grateful hearts the Church accepts the witness
and faith of her fathers expressed in the words of
the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds. The life of
the Church is conducted together according to the
Constitution agreed and adopted by the Council Assembly
but the Church affirms that it is ready as and when
necessary, to make the necessary changes in the light
of the directions of THE HOLY SPIRIT and the greater
glory of our Living Lord.
The Church is held together as one body, but it rejoices
that it has been endowed with various gifts to equip
it for work in its service to the building up of the
Body of Christ. It is the firm belief of the Church
that our Lord Jesus, the King and the Head of the
Church give His body of government quite distinct
from that of the State. In matters affecting faith
and spiritual life of the church is not subordinate
to the State. The government of the Church, appointed
by the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Divine King and
Head of the Church, has the right and power subject
to no civil authority to legislate and to adjudicate
finally, in all matters of doctrine, worship, government
and discipline in the church, including the right
to determine all questions concerning membership and
office in the Church, the Constitution and membership
of its courts and the mode of election of its office-bearers.
The Church is committed to serve our Lord Jesus Christ
who is the King and Head of the Church. The Presbyterian
Church of Ghana is therefore a Theocracy embodying
the spiritual principles of the Church government
which has inspired many of the ideals of modern democracy.
The Church respects the civil government and finds
it its duty to serve and contribute to it in maintaining
the public wealth.
The Church has under its umbrella Congregations, Districts
and Presbyteries held together by unity of profession
of faith. These sections of the Church come under
the rules of the Church for the guidance of the communities.
Accordingly, all the congregations of the Church use
the same Liturgy, Hymn Book and Catechism.
The Church accepts the priesthood of all believers
(1Peter 2:9-10) but it also believes that there are
various ministries to which the Lord calls His servants.
It holds that whiles some are called to the ministry
of the Word and Sacraments; others are led to play
their full part as lay members in the building up
of the Body of Christ. The Church finds it its inescapable
duty to keep on praying and working with others in
the furtherance on the Kingdom of God on earth so
that “the earth might be filled with the glory
of God as the waters cover the sea”.
